HOHENWALD, Tenn. - Officials at the Elephant Sanctuary say an underweight elephant confiscated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture is on his way to Tennessee.
Kate Elliott, managing director of the sanctuary, said in a news release that Ned, a 21-year-old male elephant, was taken from Florida-based circus trainer Lance Ramos today for failure to comply with the Animal Welfare Act.
The elephant was placed in the care of the Tennessee sanctuary and will arrive Sunday.
Carol Buckley, the executive director, said the sanctuary will help the elephant recover so he can be placed in a permanent home.
Founded in 1995, the sanctuary about 60 miles south of Nashville is designed specifically for old, sick or needy elephants that have been retired from zoos and circuses.
