A man woke up shortly after midnight today and escaped a fire that destroyed his home in Dunedin, fire officials said.
Deputies arrived about 12:38 a.m. today, and firefighters found flames rising as high as 50 feet in the air, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.
The department's arson detectives are investigating the fire.
Fire officials said the house's lone resident may have been awakened when his cat jumped on him, and both were able to get out of the house along with a dog.
Investigators believe the fire started in a shed in the backyard and spread to the garage and then the house.
Homes on both sides also received minor damage.
