Two people are in stable condition today after their catamaran overturned near Shell Island, authorities said.
The man and the woman, whose names were not immediately available, were taken to Bayfront Medical Center, St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue Lt. Joel Granata said.
Fire and rescue, along with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, responded to the call of the overturned boat at 4:04 p.m. The man was spotted and pulled from the water when the first units arrived, Granata said.
It took nearly an hour for rescuers to find the woman. Four boats and two helicopters searched in a grid pattern, charted tides and battled rough seas during the search, Granata said.
Fifty-eight minutes into the search, the woman appeared to simply "pop out" of the water and rescuers were able to retrieve her. She was freezing, but otherwise not seriously injured, Granata said.
The man and the woman were not wearing life jackets, he said.
