A regional task force of federal and local agents has been formed in Tampa to combat fraudulent Medicare claims throughout the state.
"We are eager to prosecute those who submit false Medicare claims and divert money into pockets of criminals instead of going to those who are in need of care and services," U.S. Attorney A. Brain Albritton said in a prepared statement.
Along with Albritton's agency, the FBI, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum's office and other local law enforcement agencies are part of Tampa's task force.
Miami, Detroit and five other cities have been selected as investigators' regional home bases, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. A team in New York arrested 30 people accused of submitting more than $61 million in bogus claims.
Tampa was chosen because of the number of false claims that have been filed in the area, authorities said.
"Over the past three years, my office has recovered millions of dollars for Medicaid recipients and ultimately for Florida taxpayers," McCollum said in a written statement. "My commitment to protecting those resources will not waver."
The teams were established by the Department of Justice and the Department of Health and Human Services.
