Stranded Dolphin Released After Making Full Recovery

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Ginger, the bottlenose dolphin stranded in December near Siesta Key, was released Monday in her home waters of Sarasota Bay, following a complete recovery.

Ginger was treated at Mote Marine's Dolphin and Whale Hospital for pneumonia and gastro-intestinal problems since her Dec. 16 stranding. She had been under the care of a veterinary team and volunteers who monitored her recovery around the clock.

The dolphin, named Ginger after gingerbread because her stranding came so close to the holidays, ate heartily while in recovery, scarfing down about 4,000 pinfish. That's 35 pinfish at five servings each day.

Ginger was equipped with a tracking device so researchers can monitor her movements.
