University of South Florida police Chief Tom Longo was recently sworn in as president of the Tampa Bay Area Chiefs of Police Association, marking the first time a university law enforcement officer has held the post.

Longo, elected in November, was sworn in Thursday by state Attorney General Bill McCollum at a law enforcement event at the Embassy Suites hotel on Fowler Avenue, USF police Capt. Bob Staehle said in a written statement.

"I'm honored to be elected to this position of trust in the Tampa Bay area," Longo said in a prepared statement. "I think this demonstrates the high regard our law enforcement peers have of the USF Police Department and the importance of the university in our community."

The association elects a new president every year.

Also honored at the event was former Hillsborough County Sheriff Walter Heinrich, who received the association's lifetime achievement award.

The Tampa Bay Area Chiefs of Police Association was formed to promote a professional organization of chiefs of police to advance professionalism in law enforcement, according to the association's Web site.

The association hosts four training seminars a year and has sponsored scholarships to students who plan to make law enforcement a career.
