Charges considered against mother in baby drowning

Prosecutors will determine whether criminal charges will be filed against a teen mother after her 11-month-old son apparently drowned in a bathtub on Sunday, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said.

Authorities give this account of what happened about 1 p.m. Sunday at the Bradenton home of mother Jessica Barnes:

Barnes, 19, told deputies that she put her son in the tub, turned on the water then left to get his towel and clothes. The child was left unattended between five and 10 minutes.

Barnes told deputies that she may have lost track of time and became worried when she didn't hear her son playing and splashing in the tub. When she returned to the bathroom, she saw the toddler submerged in the water face-down.

Barnes tried to give him CPR but couldn't revive him.

The investigation has been submitted to the State Attorney's Office for review, detectives say.

The child's first birthday would have been this coming Monday.
