President Obama has nominated Hillsborough County Circuit Judge Charlene Honeywell to the federal bench.
"I am honored and humbled to have been nominated by our president to the federal court," Honeywell said.
Honeywell, 51, was tapped for a vacancy in the U.S. Middle District of Florida, which stretches from Jacksonville to Fort Myers and is among the nation's busiest. She was one of two nominees named Thursday; the other was for a federal judgeship in South Dakota.
"They are hardworking, fair-minded, tenacious and dedicated," Obama said in a statement. "They represent the very best that our country has to offer in the way of excellence and public service."
Honeywell was selected from a list of five candidates submitted by the Florida Federal Judicial Nominating Commission.
"Judge Honeywell has distinguished herself as a state judge and will certainly distinguish herself on the federal bench," said John Fitzgibbons, current commission chairman. A previous commission compiled the list last year.
Honeywell was appointed to the state bench in 2000 by Gov. Jeb Bush. She graduated cum laude from Howard University and the University of Florida College of Law.
She was a public defender and assistant Tampa city attorney and spent several years with the Tampa law firm Hill, Ward & Henderson. She is married to Tampa police Maj. Gerald Honeywell; they have two children.
Honeywell received a "well-qualified" rating from the American Bar Association. She now faces confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
