A 15-year-old boy has been airlifted to Tampa General Hospital following a crash involving three cars in Winter Haven.
Another person was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
Deputies are continuing to work on scene at Recker Highway and 24th Street S.W., and Polk County deputies say that until about 12:20 a.m., Recker Highway will be closed from Coleman Road to 21st Street S.W.
The crash occurred about 8 p.m.
Deputies say the first crash involved a 1995 Pontiac Firebird and a 2000 Chrysler Sebring. The Firebird, driven by 15-year-old Christopher Marckovich of Winter Haven, was heading west on Recker. A vehicle in front of the Firebird slowed to turn right on 24th, investigators say.
"Marckovich, who was alone in the unregistered vehicle, drove into eastbound lane to pass, then returned to the westbound lane and the car began to fishtail and slide back into the eastbound lane," a Polk County Sheriff's Office news release states. "The turning vehicle was not involved in the crash."
The Sebring, driven by a 41-year-old woman, was heading east. It struck the Firebird's passenger side door, deputies say. The woman was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where she is in stable condition. Her name won't be released until her next of kin is notified.
Marckovich is in critical condition at Tampa General Hospital.
An investigation is ongoing.
