A Clearwater woman died in a morning crash in Sumter County.
Gloria Byers, 61, died in a crash at County Roads 475 and 314 in Bushnell, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Robert Bowles, the 48-year-old Clearwater man driving the Ford F-150 truck in which Byers was riding, was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
Troopers give this account of the 11:37 a.m. crash:
While Bowles and Byers were going north on C.R. 475, Keara Simmons, 26, of Lake Panasoffkee, lost control of her Nissan SUV, headed in the other direction, and ran head-on into Bowles' truck. Simmons and a 3-year-old passenger, Kenyla Simmons, were both seriously injured and taken to local hospitals.
The investigation is ongoing.
