A Florida Highway Patrol community service officer and another man remain in hospital a day after a pickup truck slammed into a patrol car, officials said.

Community service officer John Manna and Marion Carl Nest were knocked down and injured about 7 p.m. Tuesday on northbound U.S. 19 just north of Curlew Road, the highway patrol said.

Manna, 59, was at the scene investigating an earlier accident involving Nest, 74. The men, both from Palm Harbor, were standing near the patrol vehicle when Randy Abbarno lost control of his 2001 Toyota pickup, the highway patrol said.

Abbarno, 22, of Safety Harbor, drove across northbound U.S. 19 and rear-ended the patrol car, which struck Manna and Nest, knocking them down.

Manna is in stable condition and Nest is in serious but stable condition, the highway patrol said. Both men are at Bayfront Medical Center.

Abbarno was treated and released from Bayfront Medical Center.

The crash remains under investigation.
