A 52-year-old man was killed this morning when his bicycle was struck from behind on South Belcher Road, police said.
Stephen R. Caputo of St. Petersburg was riding south on Belcher, just south of 118th Avenue North, when his bicycle was struck by a southbound 2003 Chrysler Concorde, said Pinellas Park police Capt. Sanfield Forseth.
The Chrysler's driver, William J. Colwell, 33, of Tampa, stopped after the collision. He told investigators he didn't see the bicyclist.
Within minutes of the wreck - and before authorities arrived - a car described as a red Pontiac Firebird struck the bicycle, but not Caputo, and kept going, Forseth said.
Investigators want to talk to the driver of that car.
Caputo was wearing a reflective vest but not a helmet, police said. There was a flashlight attached to the front of his bicycle as well as a light on the rear, but investigators do not know whether the lights were on at the time.
There was no excessive speed and alcohol does not appear to be a factor, Forseth said. The morning fog had not yet rolled in and there are streetlights on that stretch of the road.
Southbound Belcher was closed for a few hours.
