A suspected identity thief who authorities say stole credit cards from cars at Pinellas County beaches almost five years ago was arrested in Miami this week.
Karoll Acosta-Gonzalez, 31, was charged on a failure-to-appear warrant issued in Miami. She originally had been charged with organized scheme to defraud and criminal use of personal information.
Acosta-Gonzalez had been a fugitive for four years, said a Florida Department of Law Enforcement news release issued today.
She originally was arrested in February 2005 along with a co-defendant, accused of breaking into vehicles and stealing credit cards left in wallets and purses.
The pair would then make fake driver's licenses to match the names on the credit cards and go on shopping sprees, purchasing high-end electronics in the Tampa Bay area, the release said.
After her arrest, Acosta-Gonzalez was released on bail in Pinellas County but failed to appear for her arraignment. FDLE agents said she fled to Canada, where she is suspected of committing similar crimes using the alias Raquel Lazo.
Monday, FDLE agents got a tip that Acosta-Gonzalez was in the Miami area. When Acosta-Gonzalez was arrested, she had identification that said her last name was Torres. A fingerprint match confirmed Torres was Acosta-Gonzalez, however, and she was booked into the Miami-Dade County Jail, where she was awaiting extradition to Pinellas.
