Tampa police are looking for the driver of a tow truck who may have witnessed the hit-and-run that killed University of Tampa student Erik Nicoletti and left Cree Riley critically injured.
The Tampa Police Department said witnesses saw a small, black tow truck with yellow lettering on the side chasing the car that hit the two as they were crossing Kennedy Boulevard near North Boulevard at 1:13 a.m. Saturday.
They did not elaborate on why the driver of the tow truck would have been chasing the car. The truck driver did not return to the scene, police said.
Nicoletti, 20, and Riley, 19, were taken to Tampa General Hospital, where Nicoletti died on Monday. Riley is in critical condition.
Police arrested Andres Trujillo, 27, after he turned himself in on Sunday. He is being held with no bail at the Orient Road Jail.
Police say he told them he dropped a cigarette while heading west on Kennedy. He hit something as he leaned down to pick it up. He thought it was a small vehicle or motorcycle but panicked and did not stop but was not drunk, police said.
Not long after the two were hit, deputies found a 1993 Chrysler New Yorker in a ditch on N. Dale Mabry Highway with a damaged front end, a windshield caved in and blood and hair on the front. Investigators traced the car to Trujillo.
