Two people were seriously injured today after their sports car collided head on with a school bus, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office said.
The 2006 2-door Toyota crossed the center line and struck the front of the school bus, said Lt. Cinda Moore, a sheriff's office spokeswoman. The 3:30 p.m. accident happened at the intersection of Cortez Boulevard and Mary's Fish Camp Road.
The passenger in the car, Brian Snyder, 30, of Spring Hill, was flown to Bayfront Medical Center with serious injuries, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The driver, Michelle Sutton, 33, of Spring Hill, was taken to Oak Hill Hospital with serious injuries.
The bus was carrying about 30 students from Westside Elementary. No students or the bus driver suffered a serious injury, although some students were treated for minor injuries, FHP said.
One student complained of breathing issues. Hernando County Fire Rescue said the student suffers from asthma.
Sutton was weaving back and forth on both eastbound and westbound lanes of Cortez Boulevard and traveling at a high rate of speed, FHP said.
Sutton will be charged with reckless driving and driving while license suspended, the FHP said. Toxicology tests will determine whether Sutton was driving under the influence.
