A Bradenton man died this morning after he was stunned by a Taser as he ran away from police.
Derrick Humbert, 38, died about 1 a.m., Bradenton police said.
Deputy Chief J.J. Lewis gave this account of what happened about 12:18 a.m. in the 700 block of 27th Street in Bradenton:
Police tried to pull over Humbert's vehicle during a traffic stop. Humbert got out of his vehicle and ran through the yards of several houses in the neighborhood. An officer used his Taser to end the chase.
Before he was to be taken to the Manatee County Jail, paramedics took Humbert to Manatee Memorial Hospital for treatment, but he died there.
Humbert was wanted on a warrant for possession of marijuana.
The investigation is ongoing; detectives are waiting on an autopsy to determine the cause of death, Lewis said.
