How cool is your carpool? That's what the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transportation Authority wants to know.
"We are looking for the coolest carpool in the Tampa Bay area," said Amy Ellis, the authority's director of communications.
The Coolest Carpool campaign allows you to submit a video proving just how awesome your carpool is.
"It doesn't have to be anything high-tech or fancy," Ellis said. "It's something you can even do with your cell phone camera."
The idea behind this program is to highlight carpooling as a fun option and get more people to share a ride to work.
David Bannar, who carpools daily with a co-worker from St. Petersburg to Tampa, likes the idea.
"On a normal day, without any hiccups in traffic, it's probably 50 minutes," Bannar said.
The two share the driving, which saves Bannar about $150 a month and relieves the stress of driving in traffic. Carpooling also keeps more vehicles off the road during peak travel times, easing congestion and lowering emissions.
"The idea is that in addition to being less expensive and better for the environment, carpooling can be fun," Ellis said.
Submit videos or vote on other videos at the authority's Coolest Carpool website through Sept. 6. Commuters who live or work in Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties are eligible.
There are two categories that will receive prizes: Judges' Choice and Viewers' Choice. Up to four people in each winning carpool will get a free Kindle electronic reader.
The authority was created by the Legislature in 2007 to develop a master transportation plan for encompassing the seven counties of West Central Florida.
