The Florida Supreme Court refused today to reinstate a Tampa lawyer who was suspended in 2006.
The court denied a request by Linda Thompson to let her resume practicing law. She was suspended for two years in 2006 for failing to properly represent clients and engaging in conduct involving fraud or deceit. She also failed to provide a written response to the Florida Bar's investigation of the case.
Thompson had the backing of a referee appointed by the Bar to review her request.
Justice Barbara J. Pariente dissented, saying the rest of her colleagues denied Thompson because she had failed to pay $2,400 in restitution to two clients and $4,694.84 in court and investigative costs.
Pariente said Thompson didn't have the resources to make the payment.
Instead, Pariente said, paying those debts could have been a condition of the three years of probation Thompson must serve once she is reinstated.
