Police said it was case of the victim outwitting the crooks.
In this case, gas station clerk Farrukh Ahmad foiled a robbery attempt early Saturday by fooling two gunmen into letting him inside a bullet-proof enclosure around the cash register, police said.
Police spokeswoman Andrea Davis credited Ahmad for his quick thinking.
"Fortunately in this case, they weren't very smart when they were committing this robbery because the clerk did outsmart them and they weren't able to get any money," Davis said.
Police said the two masked men came into the Mobile Gas Station at 4242 E. Busch Blvd. about 5 a.m. Saturday while Ahmad was in the cooler.
One robber tried to open the register while the other brought the clerk from the cooler at gunpoint, police said.
Ahmad told the robbers they had to step away so he could close the door to the enclosure around the register or the drawer would not open.
When they stepped outside, he shut the door and locked it, putting himself behind the bullet-proof glass, police said.
When contacted by phone today, Ahmad refused comment other than to say he would let the police handle the situation.
