A 72-year-old man is in critical condition today after being shot in the torso during an attempted home invasion, police said.
Robert Lorins answered a knock on the door at 2224 Gordon St. about 11:30 p.m. Monday and was shot when he tried to close the door on the gunman.
The suspect remains at large.
Lorins lives at the home with his 35-year-old son, Brett.
Brett Lorins said he was watching television in another room when his father heard a knock on the door. He told his father he wasn't expecting company.
Lorins said he heard a commotion at the front door moments later.
"I immediately ran to the door and as soon as I ran up here, my father was able to push the door shut on his own accord," he said. "I got here right after that and I guess that's when a gunshot went off. I didn't hear a gunshot. In retrospect, I think I heard a pop."
Lorins said a trauma surgeon told him his father suffered internal injuries and lost a lot of blood.
He believes his father is lucky to be alive.
"He's a tough guy," Lorins said. "He fought this guy off. He's the one who shut the door on him.
"As his son, I kick myself that I didn't see anything because I can't help," he said. "Because that's the only thing I want to do, is just help my father."
Lorins said he believes the attack was random, but police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said it's too early to say whether that's the case.
"At this point, we don't know if this house was targeted or if this is a random act," she said. "We don't have any witnesses, so our officers are out there canvassing the neighborhood, trying to find a witness. And, of course, our best witness is the victim."
