A Clearwater man was sentenced to 15 years in prison this morning after he was convicted of driving drunk when killing a man who was on a mobility scooter.
Angus Davis III had a blood-alcohol percentage of 0.348 at the time of wreck on Dec. 12, 2007, in Largo. That's more than four times the legal limit of 0.08 percent and, in the words of a prosecutor, "almost toxic."
Davis was driving a pickup truck on Missouri Avenue when his truck struck an 84-year-old man riding the scooter. The man, Jack Schaeffer of Clearwater, was killed.
Davis was charged with driving under the influence-manslaughter about a month after the wreck.
Assistant State Attorney Holly Grissinger said Davis showed no remorse after the wreck and appeared to be more concerned about getting his pickup back than anything else. He also had a prior drunken-driving conviction in 1992.
Before his truck struck Schaeffer, Davis was seen via surveillance video drinking at a pub, Grissinger said. Also, 12 empty and two full beer bottles were found in the vehicle after the wreck, Grissinger said.
Davis, 61, attended his hearing today and was in a wheelchair. He had suffered a stroke while the case was pending.
