Lightning set fundraisers to assist slain officers' families

The Tampa Bay Lightning will hold multiple fundraising efforts benefitting the families of Tampa police officers fatally shot June 29.

The efforts will take take place during the Young Guns Game Wednesday at the St. Pete Times Forum. Proceeds will go directly to the surviving spouses and families of Jeffrey Kocab and Dave Curtis.

The Lightning Foundation will accept cash donations and checks payable to the Curtis/Kocab Memorial Fund at stations located on the concourse at the Times Forum. The team also will hold a raffle for four Lighting plaza level end zone season tickets, normally a $7,196 value. The winner must be present to claim the prize.

Fans also will be able to participate in a question-and-answer session with general manager Steve Yzerman, recent free-agent acquisition Brett Clark and first-round draft pick Brett Connolly.

Kocab and Curtis, both 31, were fatally shot June 29 during a traffic stop. Dontae Rashawn Morris has been charged in the slaying.

Curtis is survived by his wife, Kelly, and four sons, ages 8 months to 9 years. Kocab is survived by his wife, Sara, who is nine months pregnant.

Other fundraising efforts:

• Donations can be made at any branch of the Tampa Bay Federal Credit Union, or checks can be mailed to the Fallen Officers' Memorial Fund, c/o Tampa Police Department, 411 N. Franklin St., Tampa FL 33602.

• The Gold Shield Foundation is taking donations to assist the families. Donations can be mailed to: Gold Shield Foundation, P.O. Box 271791, Tampa, FL 33688.
