People are being let back into the downtown courthouse building after it was temporarily evacuated when someone noticed a suspicious package propped up against a door on the third floor.
The St. Petersburg Police Department was notified of the package at 501 First Ave. N. about 11:30 a.m. today, police spokesman Bill Proffitt said.
In addition to courtrooms, the building contains several government offices, including an elections supervisor office.
The package was described as a brown bag with something inside, Proffitt said. It was propped up against a door on the third floor, about five feet from an elevator, in the vicinity of the worker's compensation office, Proffitt said.
All 10 floors of the building were evacuated, and the Tampa bomb squad was called, Proffitt said.
The bomb squad said the bag did not contain any explosive or dangerous devices but did not reveal its contents.
