Hotel prices U.S. travelers paid around the world gradually began to rise from April through June compared with a year ago, Hotels.com said in a report of its bookings that was released this week.
The Italian island of Capri was the world's priciest destination at an average of $267 a night, 7 percent higher than a year ago.
New York was the most expensive U.S. city of those tracked in the global list, with prices averaging $224 a night, a 14 percent increase.
However, travelers to Tampa paid 11 percent less this year averaging $94 a night for rooms in the second quarter.
A gradual return of business travel and a pick up in domestic travel fueled the overall increases, which were not calculated as an overall average, Hotels.com reported.
The Hotels.com report found U.S. travelers on the whole paid less for their domestic trips, averaging $114 for hotels in the United States compared with $161 a night for trips abroad.
Las Vegas was the most popular domestic destination for U.S. travelers, followed by New York, Orlando, Chicago and San Francisco.
Hotels.com provides discounts for more than 120,000 hotels in 60 countries.
In addition to nightly rates, bargain hunters should be attentive to hotel brand promotions, such as earning additional bonus points that can be accumulated for providing free overnight stays.
Travelocity.com is offering a promotional code that gives consumers 10 percent discounts for Gulf of Mexico hotels on two night or longer stays in Florida, Mississippi and Alabama, when booking with an American Express Card.
Those interested in a vacation close to home can find discount offers at visitstpetersburgclearwater.com and visittampbay.com for Pinellas and Hillsborough County discounts advertised by the local visitors bureaus.
