Three people broke into a house and two were shot - one fatally - by a resident inside after a scuffle late Tuesday, Pinellas County deputies said.
A resident in house at 2311 Lorena Lane, near Clearwater, was also wounded, the sheriff's office said.
The man who died was identified as Anson B. Felton, 19, of Clearwater.
Deputies have not identified the others involved in the incident, which occurred just before midnight, deputies said.
According to detectives, at least two of the intruders were armed. Once inside, they tried to rob the occupants.
A resident who was armed grew fearful and pulled out his weapon, the sheriff's office said. A struggle ensued as one of the thieves tried to disarm the resident, deputies said. During the struggle, Fenton was fatally shot and another resident was wounded.
The armed resident then fired on the other intruders, hitting one of them, deputies said. The surviving intruders fled.
Investigators learned a wounded man later turned up at an area hospital. The suspect remains at the hospital. The third suspect is still being sought, the sheriff's office said.
The resident who was shot was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Deputies have responded to the home 23 times from January 1, 2010, to the present. The calls for service have included assault and battery, suspicious person, wanted person, armed person, juvenile trouble, noise and lost or stolen tag.
Detectives don't believe the attempted armed robbery was a random act but are trying to learn the relationships of the people involved. The case remains under investigation, the sheriff's office said.
