Two antique cars – valued at $92,000 combined – were stolen from the garage of a Wimauma home, Hillsborough County deputies said today.
One car is a purple 1929 two-door Ford coupe with Florida tag SRO5474. Valued at $67,000, it has a 350-horsepower, eight-cylinder Corvette engine, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.
The other car is a two-door blue 1975 Chevrolet Corvette with Florida tag BD4948. That car, which is a convertible, is valued at $25,000 and has a 350-horsepower, eight-cylinder engine.
Darwin Downey, sales manager at classic car dealership Golden Classics of Clearwater, said the souped-up 1929 Coupe is a "pretty rare car," with perhaps only a dozen or so like it in the Tampa Bay area.
"They would really have a lot of trouble trying to get rid of something like that," he said of thieves. "Classic cars are a lot harder to get rid of than newer cars because they're so rare."
The 1975 Corvette, meanwhile, isn't rare, Downey said.
"There's probably hundreds of them in the Tampa Bay area," he said.
Deputies summoned Thursday to a home in the 3100 block of Arrowsmith Road discovered someone had entered the building through a sliding glass door and ransacked the property.
The suspects also took about $6,000 in furniture, appliances and electronics, including a stove, television, entertainment center and scanner/printer.
Those with information about the theft may call deputies at (813) 247-8200 or call Crime Stoppers at (800) 873-8477.
