Crews have nearly completed repairing a sewer line that broke on Sand Key, sending sewage into Clearwater's intracoastal waterway on Tuesday.
Traffic on Gulf Boulevard is still being diverted about ¾ of a mile south of the Sand Key Bridge as crews finish restoration and clean up.
The 16-inch sewer line burst at a PVC fitting that was installed during a road widening project in 2000, said Joelle Castelli, spokesman for the City of Clearwater.
Some of the sewage spilled into a storm drain and made its way into the intracoastal waterway.
The spill was reported to the state, warning signs are posted and the water in the area is being sampled, Castelli said.
Sampling will go on until normal levels are reached, Castelli said.
