A 28-year-old North Port man died early today after his car struck a tree in Sarasota County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
James C. VanHorn was killed at Webber Street and Leafy Lane at 2:50 a.m., the patrol said.
VanHorn was headed east on Webber in a 1997 Lincoln Continental, as was a 1998 Cadillac Seville driven by Brayam Alfaro-Piliado, 16, of Bradenton. VanHorn was in the left lane and Alfaro-Pilado was in the right lane to his rear, the patrol said.
The Cadillac drove off the right side of the road, striking two mailboxes, the patrol said. Alfaro-Piliado veered to the left, losing control of the vehicle and causing it to hit two oak trees in the median before stopping.
VanHorn also veered and lost control of his vehicle, striking one of the same trees hit by Alfaro-Piliado's vehicle. VanHorn's car split in half.
Alfaro-Piliado was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital in serious condition.
Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, and both drivers were wearing seatbelts, the patrol said.
