Parents were charged with aggravated child abuse Tuesday after leaving their 2-year-old son in a hot car, Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies say.
The boy lost consciousness after being locked in a 2001 Hyundai with no air conditioning for about 25 minutes at 2540 E. Bearss Ave., according to an arrest affidavit. Investigators said the temperature in the vehicle was more than 100 degrees.
The boy was locked in the car about 3:50 p.m. A passerby saw the child in the parked car with closed windows and called law enforcement, a sheriff's office news release states.
The child was in the front driver's seat, sweating and fading in and out of consciousness, deputies say. Deputies broke a car window to get to the child.
He was taken to University Community Hospital. The child was released to child protection investigators.
Deputies arrested parents John Kirk Hayes, 26, and Geri Ann Blakeslee, 29, Tuesday. Hayes also was charged with violating probation on two counts of felony cruelty to animals.
Hayes and Blakeslee, both of 3303 North Lakeview Drive, No. 3011, remain in Orient Road Jail. No bail has been set.
