A 36-year-old New Tampa man is recovering after being bitten by a pygmy rattlesnake Friday night.

Randy Scragg, of the 8000 block of Hampton Glen Drive, walked out to his driveway wearing flip-flops at about 9 p.m. Friday, when he was bit on the ankle by the snake, according to his wife, Lisa.

He killed the snake and was taken by his friends to Tampa General Hospital's emergency room, where he was given anti-venom. Lisa Scragg said her husband was in the emergency unit until Sunday evening.

"He needed constant monitoring," she said. "We were a little nervous when we asked the side effect of the anti-venom."
