A check forgery arrest at a supermarket this week has uncovered a trove of fake identification cards and phony checks, authorities say.

In the end, Temple Terrace police charged Brad D. Webster, 45, no address given, with 51 felony counts ranging from forgery and possession of counterfeit checks to identity theft and failing to register as a sex offender.

Additionally, police said, he was held on outstanding warrants from Missouri and Kansas on similar charges.

Police said that Webster walked into the Publix on North 53rd Street Thursday afternoon and tried to buy three $50 American Express gift cards with a personal check. When the store's employees could not confirm the information on the check, they called police.

Initially, Webster identified himself as Avon Simmons, police said. But, police found several false identification cards and driver's licenses in his wallet. They all had his photograph on them, but each had a different name, police said.

They also found 28 counterfeit checks.

Webster remained in the Orient Road Jail on Friday. No bail was set.
