The Heart Gallery, a photo collage of children available for adoption, has 32 new members, all looking for new, permanent homes.
As the gallery's coordinators at the Children's Board of Hillsborough County work to add new foster children to the list of those available for adoption, a hair salon with locations in Ybor City and downtown Tampa already is displaying the gallery. The event is dubbed Love is in the Hair.
The Heart Gallery is a photo gallery of all the foster children available through the county for adoption. Each child has their photo and a short biography included in the gallery.
In addition to showcasing the gallery, Tribeca Colorsalons are also holding a friendly competition among stylists to see which one can get the most clients to donate to a new fund set up to provide extras for foster children. The winning stylist gets a free massage.
"The money is going to fill gaps of services," Heart Gallery Director Jesse Miller said. "One of our big missions is to improve quality of life for these kids while they are in foster care.
"Last week we had a girl who auditioned for choir and needed $75 for a choir robe," Miller said. "Another kid needed cleats and a uniform for baseball. Another needed to rent a tux for prom last spring."
Each client who donates to the fund also filled out a Valentine for one of the foster children. At the end of the month, Tribeca Colorsalon owner Brandon Wagner will cut a check for the Heart Gallery fund.
Wagner is matching client donations.
The salons are at 1600 E. Eighth Ave. in Centro Ybor and 920 W. Kennedy Blvd. in Tampa.
