Red-light runners, you've got mail.
During a 60-day warning period in November and December, 2,770 motorists received citations for running red lights at six Hillsborough County intersections recently outfitted with traffic cameras.
Two of the intersections are in Brandon; on Bloomingdale Avenue at Bell Shoals Road, and on State Road 60 at Grand Regency Boulevard.
During the grace period, 70 drivers received warnings for blowing through the light on Bloomingdale at Bell Shoals.
Violators caught on camera now receive a $125 citation in the mail, along with the evidence: a photo of the car just before it entered the intersection with the red light, a close-up shot that shows the license plate and the link to a Web site where the driver can view a video of the violation.
Drivers who want to appeal the citation may do so before a special magistrate appointed by the county's code enforcement department. The citations do not count against the driver's record or affect his or her insurance premiums.
Sheriff's Cpl. Darrin Barlow said the cameras are aimed at drivers who run red lights straight on or with left-hand turns. Motorists who make right-hand turns on red will not be ticketed if they are going 15 mph or less.
The sites were selected based on the frequency and severity of accidents at crossroads countywide. In 2008, Barlow said, there were 67 collisions at the intersection in front of Bloomingdale Square shopping center.
Other corners with cameras are Waters Avenue and Dale Mabry Boulevard, Waters and Anderson Road, Fletcher Avenue and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, and Sligh Avenue and Habana Avenue.
