Recreation center starting table tennis league

Russell Elefterion thinks table tennis will be the next popular sport for adults.

And the senior recreation specialist at Roy Haynes Park is trying to put a league together to capitalize on the sport's potential.

The Washington (state) Recreation and Parks Association "said in a recent article that Ping-Pong is the next upcoming sport for adults," Elefterion said.

His goal is to have the league ready to go by January. The recreation center will have four tables set up. Two tables will be for novice players and two for experienced. The season will last for 10 weeks, but there will be some time in January allotted for free play.

"I have a feeling this will be big," he said.

Elefterion said players can use their own paddles or they can use the ones provided. Games will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays at Roy Haynes Park, 1902 S. Village Ave. The cost to participate is $10.

To get the league started, Elefterion needs about 11 more players to sign up. So far, nine have shown interest.
