Children's Home to add organic farm

A new plan is cropping up at Tampa's Children's Home as they get ready to add an organic farm.

Sweetwater Organic Community Farm plans to expand its operations by adding a new site at The Children's Home on Memorial Highway. The 5-acre farm will feature some of the same organic crops available at the main site.

"There is so much demand for what we do, and we had this opportunity to lease land from The Children's Home," said Rick Martinez, executive director and founder of the farm.

Sweetwater is supported by members who pay a fee to get a share of the crops grown. Items are also available to the general public through a weekly market.

The farm also holds educational workshops on farming and other issues. For example, an upcoming class teaches the public how to use natural herbs and plants to create homemade fragrances.

"We'll offer those same types of educational opportunities for the children staying at the home," Martinez said. The Children's Home serves neglected, abused and abandoned children.

Sweetwater plans to begin planting on the new spot this summer. The group recently held a fundraiser for the project.

"We have a long list of needs to get this up and running," Martinez said. "We serve the community and they help us."
