After working at McDonald's for 11 years, Ruth Ann Lair is excited to have some time to sleep in.
Lair, who has Down syndrome, recently decided to retire from her Saturday morning job at the Waters Avenue and Hanley Road eatery because of transportation issues.
Lair's sister, Mary Olson, said it also was a good idea to have her retire since she works at the MacDonald Training Center five days a week and is involved in several other activities.
Lair's coworkers and family hosted a celebration to honor her for her dedication to the job.
Coworkers decorated the store with balloons and brought in a card and cake.
"I am speechless, I really am," Lair said. "Everyone here is like family to me."
"She has accomplished a lot," said Heather Williams, restaurant manager. "It's going to be different. Customers are used to seeing her on Saturday mornings. Customers will miss her."
While at McDonald's, Lair was in charge of cleaning and maintaining the lobby and parking lot, as well as greeting customers and ensuring that they were enjoying their meals.
Lair, 56, said she plans to sleep in on Saturdays and participate in the Superstars Bowling League at PinChasers.
Lair also is a member at Faith Outreach Center where she is part of a singles group.
