PORT EVERGLADES — The U.S. Coast Guard has responded to a suspected mine floating about a mile off the coast of Port Everglades.

A Coast Guard spokeswoman says crews set up a 300-foot safety zone around the device Thursday afternoon. It was reported a short time earlier by a good Samaritan.

The spokeswoman says the U.S. Navy is on the way to retrieve the object and determine whether it is dangerous.
