Mommy bloggers plan free picnic to help oil spill cleanup efforts

There's a great chance to get outside, enjoy some free food and help the animals affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico all at the same time this weekend.

Four local mommy bloggers got together with Hebrew National to host the free "Better-Than-A-Picnic picnic" on Saturday, June 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at E.G. Simmons Park in Ruskin.

Usually there's a $2 per car fee to enter the park, but just tell the gate attendants you're there for the picnic and they'll waive the fee. You won't be able to miss the group; they'll be at Picnic Shelter 17.

Organizers will be collecting donations to help Save Our Seabirds and the National Wildlife Foundation respond to the oil spill disaster. Some great items to bring would be Dawn dish soap, paper towels, old towels and bleach.

"A lot of people are feeling pretty helpless and aren't sure how to help and there's a lot of things that they need that are normal household items," Wesley Chapel mommy blogger Caroline Jorgensen said. She has a full list of donation ideas on her website, www.morningsidemom.com.

"We'll have picnic tables, free hot dogs, picnic food, and a big puzzle that kids can put together," Jorgensen said. "I think we're going to be making bird feeders with the kids and will write thank-you notes for the volunteers to put in with the donated items."

Local mommy bloggers Connie Roberts from Brain Foggles, Tracey Henry from Suburban Diva and Janet Dean from Green Mom Review joined Jorgensen in putting the event together. Hebrew National is hosting community service picnics like this one in nine cities this year.
