Now that we've built the world's largest machine, the Internet, and have amazing tools to instantly search it from top to bottom, what we most tried to find out about over the past 12 months says a lot about what tops our minds.
And it's nothing to be proud of.
The top international query for news on the Google search engine was for American Idol, a TV show that helps us discover the next superstar for public worship.
The second biggest search was for YouTube, an Internet site that presents an astonishing variety of videos posted by users. Among the most popular videos are, of course, ones about American Idol.
Singer Britney Spears, who self-destructed in public this year, was the world's third most-searched-for item.
After Britney came the 2007 world cricket match, Chris Benoit (the pro wrestler who killed himself, wife and son), the iPhone (which helps you keep YouTube handy), model Anna Nicole Smith (a former model who died), Paris Hilton (a party girl who survived jail), Iran (a country in the news), and Vanessa Hudgens (star of the Disney channel whose nude photo appeared on the Internet.)
The Bible advises, "Seek and ye shall find." Our Internet searches reveal that ancient truth to be a mixed blessing.
