Winning Railroads

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The railroads can't win. As a worker bee of a pretty good size customer of the nation's railroads, I know we - and our competitors - are always complaining about the shortage of service. Lack of rail space clogs up ports, rail delays at log-jammed hub cities limit main line trains and drive us nuts. There are not enough trains and tracks to carry all the freight we collectively offer. We are always complaining that the railroad is not expanding its service enough to meet demand, and why don't they do something about it? Don't they care about people?

Now I hear Pam Iorio shouting from the rooftops that the railroad needs to put her passengers - the people - first, and not the freight. Who, may I ask our esteemed mayor, does she think the railroad's customer's are? Potted plants?

We do desperately need the light rail, but unless there is a clear route where all of the railroad's customers can be served well, it is going to be a long, tough battle. There is only so much space on a railroad track, and there are probably not many 50-mile by 50-foot lots lying around for more track.
