Leaked designs reported to be next year's jerseys for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays show that the team plans to nearly exterminate its sea creature mascot. The redesign features a crisp but bland logo that simply says 'Rays,' with yellow sunbeams peaking through the hole in the blue R.
Gone too are the distinctive green and black colors in favor of a nondescript white and blue, colors that are tasteful but uninspired.
The team will unveil new uniforms in mid-November, but Fox News says the published images are accurate. We hope reports are wrong that the team is dropping the name 'Tampa Bay' from its on-the-road jerseys. Because 'Rays' is not a recognizable identifier, such as the red St. Louis cardinal, a geographic name is appropriate.
Many fans will miss the devil ray, which may still appear on an arm patch, but deemphasizing the slow-swimming black blob will symbolize a break from the team's history of losses. What will matter to fans are the players inside the uniforms, and how they play.
If the team begins to win, any uniform redesign will be a hit.
