Perhaps New Day Is Dawning

Regarding "Blacks Share Pride Over Obama's Win" (front page, Jan. 5):

Isn't it amazing what someone who is well-educated and well-spoken can accomplish regardless of race! The surprise over Barack Obama's win in Iowa is interesting in that blacks are proud of the victory delivered by whites, given Iowa's 2 percent black population. As the article notes, his support among blacks is "far from monolithic."

We have obviously come much further in race relations than many black leaders would have us believe. Even while many blacks do not support him, Obama is out there gaining in popularity. The errors of the past are indeed glaring, but there is no concerted effort in place today to keep any person or race subjugated in America.

As a white Republican, I find Obama's political ideologies to be a bit too liberal for me. I am, however, extremely impressed with the man. It is truly wonderful to see him dispelling some of the myths that have plagued us for far too long. Perhaps a new day is dawning.
