Repeat Offenders Free To Re-Offend

Regarding "Manhunt Continues For 3rd Burglary Suspect In Crash" (Metro, May 17):

Two were captured at the crash site. One captured has now 21 arrests and the other has 13. Why were they prowling our streets?

The judges say they do not have the authority to permanently incarcerate these repeat offenders. The legislators say we could not get a law like California that says, in essence, "Three strikes and you are permanently a guest of the state." Lisa Freiberg and her two small children were killed and mutilated by a repeat offender, and this should have been enough to demand a three-strike law.

As usual, it will take a series of horrible incidents to get the public sufficiently aroused to get something done. Are any members of our state Legislature willing to step up to the plate on this issue?
