Regarding "Hillsborough School Employees Strike Deal For 2% Raise" (Metro, Sept. 13):
As a past employed educator in Hillsborough County Schools, I was appalled by teachers' union executive director Yvonne Lyons' comment concerning the proposed 2 percent step pay increase. In saying, "They're going to be pleased with it," she proves how little our community values the education of our upcoming generation. What does it say about the world today if our teachers' salaries don't reach the minimum cost of living index? How pathetic is it when our dedicated teachers must be pleased with and settle for a pittance of a raise?
Until we realize the core reason why our country is beginning to fall behind in many areas, the continued crumbling of our education system will occur. Why should a failing endeavor be properly funded? Let's start with the dedicated employees on the front line. That sounds like a plan.
