Regarding "A chilling effect" (front page, July 26):
About female alligators not over-mothering, I may not have those fancy diplomas on my wall, but take it from a non-educated person who has built fence lines in swamps: They do indeed protect their young. Maybe not the "city" lake ones, but the truly wild alligator will think nothing of killing you for coming too close to her nest.
Is she a good mother after hatching? I dunno - didn't wait around to find out. I highly suggest that for all.
