This year there are no judicial elections in Hillsborough County. But voters will have the chance to retain Chief Justice Charles Canady and Justices Jorge Labarga, James Perry and Ricky Polston of the Florida Supreme Court, as well as Judges Marva Crenshaw, Patricia Kelly, Nelly Khouzam, Robert Morris, Stevan Northcutt, Craig Villanti and Douglas Wallace of the 2nd District Court of Appeal.
All are qualified and should be retained.
Voters should not confuse this retention vote with a recall election. The judges' names are listed because the Florida Constitution requires appellate judges to survive a retention vote every six years to remain in office. They are not running against each other or anyone else.
No judge has ever been ousted in a merit retention election.
A recent statewide poll of Florida's lawyers gave high marks to each of the appellate judges. The Tribune urges voters to vote yes for the retention of Charles T. Canady, Jorge Labarga, James E.C. Perry, Ricky L. Polston, Marva L. Crenshaw, Patricia Kelly, Nelly N. Khouzam, Robert Morris, Stevan T. Northcutt, Craig C. Villanti and Douglas A. Wallace.
