As a Florida native, I am totally disgusted with the move to further limit recreational fishing access to grouper. The restrictions are from a government agency that continues to use questionable science to come to these inane decisions.
Recreational fishermen impact the resource very little when compared to the large commercial take. Kenny Wright's commentary ("New ocean policy creates many opportunities," Sept. 2) on how I should welcome more government intervention in my life is a pure joke. The fact that these people are making decisions that affect the lifestyles and livelihoods of many Florida residents is candidly frightening.
While I applaud and support his current conservation efforts, the work done there does not translate to support of offshore closure of grouper fishing and a huge government takeover of the Florida's recreational resource.
It has been my experience that whenever the federal government involves itself to this great extent, there may be a commercial fishing lobbyist in the rock pile somewhere.
