NFL flagged
Regarding "Senators do battle with NFL blackouts" (Metro, Jan. 29): How can the National Football League claim that all its games are shown on free TV? Last time I looked, you have to pay for either cable or satellite to watch ESPN or the NFL Network.

Out of class
Regarding "We need muckraking" (Letter of the Day, Jan. 31): Irwin Schuster is out of his weight class. Just what is it about Barack Obama's background and experience that was not known? He took office in a major crisis brought on by his predecessor, and the Republican leadership publically swore to make him a one-term president.
Yes, indeed, we got what we got. We have ended the unfunded war in Iraq, we are trying to get out of Afghanistan, and we are recovering, although slowly. For those not liking Obamacare, fix it or replace it. What we have doesn't work.

Church's concern 'hollow'
Regarding "Bishop assails federal mandate" (front page, Jan. 31): Bishop Robert Lynch should tend his flock and not remind us that the Catholic Church is out of touch with most issues today. Worldwide child abuse. Policies against condoms in Africa, leading to untold misery from AIDS. The sins of the church's past.
The misinformation never ends, but it is slowly being relegated to the sidelines of history by the continued degradation of relevancy of religion in our lives. Lynch first spoke about not providing health care to dioceses employees while disregarding that we live in a free and open society and it's up to the individual employee to decide if they want contraception. It's discrimination otherwise.
Now he is making up an issue, saying the health care law could provide "mandatory abortion coverage sometime in the future." The church's great concern for embryos rings hollow taking into account the actions of untold priests.
