Regarding "Study slams traffic cameras" (front page, Feb. 12): In the early 1980s my family drove from Germany to Salzburg, Austria, where I was pleasantly surprised to see traffic signals flashing green twice at the end of their normal cycle before turning amber and then red. Drivers approaching a "stale" green were thus given additional warning that the signal was about to change to amber. A similar modification to our present system could, I presume, be done easily with the addition of an inexpensive chip. Lengthening the amber signal period as suggested would not solve anything, except to prolong the time available to "crash" the light.
