As we near the qualifying period for candidates seeking office in Hillsborough County, have you ever wondered why so much focus is on the collection of monetary contributions instead of qualifications, and job performance if they are a current elected official? As I browse the supervisor of elections website, I can't help but notice the focus is on money.
As a registered voter, why would it be so important for me to know a candidate who is running unopposed has raised more than $100,000 or a county commissioner has raised over $95,000? What is going on? The ultimate decision is the "vote," not the "money." How did we get off focus?
We have opened the doors to lobbying on a local (county) level. This is dangerous. Let's not allow our great county to become a cesspool of bad judgment. Allow your vote to be the deciding factor, not money. Did you know at the end of the election the candidate can dispose of the money?
It is your "vote," Hillsborough, not the money that should determine who wins an election or moves forward to the general election.
